National Assistance League

  • Founded in Los Angeles in the early 1900s.
  • The first nonprofit, nonsectarian, nonpolitical organization begun in the West.
  • Dedicated to putting caring and commitment into action through community-based philanthropic programs.
  • All National Assistance League® chapters participate in one national philanthropic program - Operation School Bell®. This program has successfully clothed students in need for more than 50 years.
  • Each chapter is autonomous in selecting and maintaining other philanthropic programs as needed in the community.

2008-2009 Statistics

  • 26,000 members in 122 chapters nationwide.
  • 2.6 million volunteer hours enhance the lives of more than 1.2 million men, women, and children.
  • National return to community across the country was $36 million.
  • 122 chapters assisted 395,000 people on budgets of more than $9.6 million.
  • In 2007-08 Operation School Bell budgets totaled $11.8 million and served nearly 270,000 children.
  • Nearly 70,000 teddy bears were distributed at a cost of only $300,000.

Assistance League of Atlanta

  • Assistance League® of Atlanta was founded on October 20, 1982 by 34 women.
  • All-volunteer, nonprofit organization that helps children and adults in need rebuild their lives.
  • Assistance League of Atlanta is a 501 (c)(3) corporation and donations are tax deductible.

2008-2009 Statistics

  • Over 250 members.
  • Over 53,000 volunteer hours estimated at more than $1 million.
  • 76.4 percent return to community.
  • Provides clothing, goods, and scholarships to children and adults in need through six ongoing philanthropic programs.
  • Programs are funded and run entirely by 100 percent volunteer efforts and enable us to:

     * Comfort traumatized children (Bears for Children)
     * Fund college scholarships (Links to Education)
     * Aid the homeless and abused (New Beginnings)
     * Clothe students in need (Operation School Bell)
     * Support patient rehabilitation (Shepherd Center Patient Support)
     * Provide layettes to newborns (Wee Help)

  • More than 80 percent of Assistance League's funding in Atlanta comes from the sale of donated goods in its Attic Treasures Thrift Shop located in Chamblee, Georgia.
  • In addition to Attic Treasures sales, cash contributions, in-kind gifts, member dues, and grants also provide support for Assistance League community programs.
